Mum has discovered voice notes

Four minutes long, recorded on speaker, starting with “Hello? Is it recording?” And somehow the best thing she ever left me.

A smiling woman in a headwrap and a floral top.

My mother used to call. Then she learned voice notes, and our family has not been the same.

Her voice notes follow a structure. They begin with “Hello? Hello? Is it recording?” for eleven seconds. Then a report on the weather in Nyeri, whether or not you asked. Then the news, which is mostly about people you have never met (“You remember Mama Sharon’s son? The tall one? Anyway.”). Then, in the final four seconds, the actual point.

It started with “Hello? Is it recording?”, obviously. Then she told me about the day I got lost between the tomato stalls when I was six, and how she found me eating mangoes with a woman who had adopted me for the afternoon. Then she said she was proud of me. Then she asked me to bring sugar.

I have listened to it maybe forty times. The first eleven seconds are still the best part.

Hello? Is it recording?

Made you want to go somewhere?
