Six friends, one Together, and Kevin
Something that only opens when all six are there. Five are there. Kevin is “niko karibu”.

Every friendship group has a Kevin, and if yours doesn’t, it’s you.
Faith had left it at the rooftop bar where they celebrated finishing campus: a video from graduation day, set to open only when all six of them were there together.
By 7pm, five of them were there. The map said “5 of 6 here · Waiting for Kevin”. Kevin, as always, was a small moving dot of hope.
A transcript, lightly edited
- 7:02 · Kevin: “Niko karibu.”
- 7:15 · Kevin: “Niko kwa jam, bana.”
- 7:31 · Kevin: “Nimefika Westlands.” (He had not.)
- 7:44 · Kevin: “Mnaona hii traffic?” (Nobody could see the traffic. Nobody was in the traffic.)
- 7:58 · Kevin: “Two minutes.”
- 8:40 · Kevin arrives, out of breath, saying “Mbona hamkuanza?”
Because we couldn’t, Kevin. That was the entire point. It does not open without you. At all.
The video played. Six people on a rooftop watched six slightly younger people throw their graduation caps, and one cap, very clearly Kevin’s, land in a tree. There was a long silence, and then a lot of shouting.
Faith is already planning the next one. She says it will open at 7pm sharp, and she has told Kevin it opens at 6.
Made you want to go somewhere?
